Jennifer Mixan-Darden, LPC

Jennifer Mixan-Darden

is a Licensed Professional Counselor and has provided counseling to children, adolescents and young adults for ten years. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in psychology and Master’s degree in Counselor Education from Virginia Commonwealth University. She worked as a school counselor before pursuing her Post Master’s degree in Professional Counseling through the Department of Rehabilitation with Virginia Commonwealth University.

Ms. Mixan-Darden has worked as a therapeutic clinician and counselor in community mental health with at-risk youth in urban settings and in residential treatment centers for several years, obtaining certification as a clinical trauma professional. She has considerable experience over the past five years specifically working with adolescent girls ages 12 to 21 and their families. She has experience working with a multitude of mental health concerns, including managing symptoms of anxiety, depression, adjustment issues and ADHD, mitigating self-harming behaviors, regulating mood instability, and building healthy coping strategies.

Ms. Mixan-Darden enjoys working with those experiencing the challenges of young adulthood, including navigating career development, higher education, independence, and adult relationships. She uses a person-centered and narrative therapy approach while pulling therapeutic techniques from cognitive behavioral therapies, dialectical behavior therapy, solution focused therapy, and interpersonal therapies. She believes in meeting someone where they are in their personal journey, and working collaboratively with nonjudgmental, unconditional positive regard to help improve daily functioning and increase satisfaction with life and self. Ms. Mixan-Darden enjoys helping others find the answers they seek, develop solutions, and establish healthy coping skills that are often within themselves waiting to surface by providing support and understanding.
