has been treating individual adults and couples as a therapist with The Westwood Group since 1991. His specialties include depression, stress management, anger control, and anxiety disorders, such as social anxiety, panic disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. He also treats individuals and couples for communication difficulties and for the psychological components of male and female sexual dysfunctions. Dr. Thornton’s therapy style embraces cognitive-behavioral therapy techniques with a supportive, goal-oriented emphasis.

Dr. Thornton earned M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in clinical psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University, and B.A. and M.Ed. degrees from the University of Virginia. He received one year of specialized training in marital and sex therapy from the Psychiatry Department of VCU Medical School. He completed his internship year at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk and residency year at Poplar Springs Hospital in Petersburg, where he served as staff psychologist for adult inpatients for four years. He has also completed Level 2 Training in Gottman Method Couples Therapy.

Dr. Thornton also has experience in diverse settings: as a therapist in a college counseling center, group therapist in several psychiatric hospitals, therapist for alcohol education/support groups, and group therapist in group homes for the aged. Thus, he enjoys treating adults of all ages, from college freshmen to senior citizens.

Over the past 25 years, Dr. Thornton has been active in the Virginia Academy of Clinical Psychologists in various capacities, promoting adequate insurance coverage for mental health treatment.
